I do not believe the reviewer's concerns are as critical as he makes them out to be, but the review was well thought out and intelligently written.
More fodder for discussion . . . |
the Archbishop of Canterbury believes that the books (if not the movies) are more of an attack on dogmatic religion and its authoritative institutions than it is on the Christian faith.
that said, the author, Phillip Pullman, is on my "wag of the finger" list because he attacked C.S. Lewis' Narnia books as racist, which I don't see at all. I'll be watching the movie, but i'm going to look for a good movie by a good director, not to support the writer. |

| I've read The Golden Compass, and I'm halfway through The Subtle Knife. They are very engrossing, and the world he creates for his characters is amazing. |
I completely enjoyed the series and I hope the movie can capture the excitement the book made me feel.
I would encourage everyone to read the series if you like books of the science/fantasy genre. |

Wow! Except for his dashes to Narnia, Pullman just went up several notches in my book. The article writer's quotes were meant to show how Pullman is attacking Christiantity, but it showed me that Pullman is helping Christianity grow up.
I think smart Christians will take the books as an opportunity to re-evaluate which parts of their church's belief system they believe in...
Ya know... that makes me think. Maybe that's why Catholics are so open and accepting.
Maybe the fact that "cafeteria Catholic" and "non-practicing Catholic" and "Easter and Christmas Catholics" are accepted terms explains why Catholics are more accepting and loving. The religious organization has channels of dialogue that allow for their organization's beliefs to be picked and chosen from. Very few other religious organizations are so open (albeit none would admit to that; I'm just looking at what's in practice by the general populace.) Maybe that acceptance makes Catholics more accepting in general.
I'm just speaking in stereotypes above. I realize that the individual Catholics span the whole spectrum. |
